Friends and Family

Spoiler: 3-5
Dahlia is Morgan's daughter, which makes her Iris' twin sister, and Pearl's half sister. Her foster sister is Valerie Hawthorne.

Name Origin:
Japanese
: Miyanagi is a name that evokes a feeling of tranquility. Chinami may come from the phrase, chi mo namida mo nai ("without blood or tears"), basically meaning "heartless." Also follows Naruhodou's naming convention, as chinami ni means "by the way."

Mukui satoko literally means "a vengeful foster child."

English: Dahlia is the name of a flower, but is especially well known from the murder mystery The Black Dahlia. Her last name may be a reference to her "having thorns."

It may also be a reference to famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote Rappaccini's Daughter: A short story in which a man falls in love with a woman. This woman has a strong poison coursing through her veins and can kill anything with a simple touch. (-thanks Emeraldwind!)

Her surname "Foster" mimics her Japanese name.

French:  Her last name is French for "plantlet."

Background:

Spoiler: 1-4
Dahlia was born, along with Iris, to Morgan in Kurain. But their father resented his pour status as a man in a village run by women, and he eventually left, taking his daughters with him. He remarried, but as his new wife already had a daughter (Valerie) he left Iris at a shrine and kept only Dahlia.

Spoiler: 1-4
Dahlia hated her father, and when she was 14 convinced 20 year old Terry Fawles to help her in a plot to steal from him and escape the family. The plan was for him to fake kidnap her and hold her for ransom, that being her father's prized sapphire. Her step sister Valerie was in on the plot as well to help secure the exchange. After Terry had the jewel, she would run away with him. But when the time came Dahlia threw herself into the Eagle River (with the sapphire) in an attempt to cut Terry out of the deal. Her body was never found, and Terry was tried and convicted for her murder.

Dahlia actually washed up on the river bank at Hazakura, where her sister discovered and nursed her back to health.

Six years later Terry escaped from prison, and Valerie Hawthorne was killed. During the course of the trial Dahlia appeared under the assumed name Melissa Foster as a witness, implicating Terry in the murder. Though Mia, along with Diego, pushed "Melissa" as a viable suspect, the trial ended before a verdict could be reached when Terry drank a vial of poison. As it turned out, he did so under instruction from Dahlia, as "proof of their love."

Spoiler: 1-4
Dahlia went free.  Six months later she got her revenge on Diego by poisoning a cup of his coffee with the same poison that had killed Terry.  The poison vial, which was actually a pendant she wore as a necklace, she handed off to Phoenix so that she wouldn't be caught with it.  She intended to kill him later and get it back, but her sister Iris begged her to spare his life, promising to get the necklace back herself.  Dahlia waited six months for Iris to do so, but when she failed, took matters into her own hands and tried to kill Phoenix herself.

Japanese: The only reference I found for his name came from a Japanese site, which speculates his name is a jumbled reference to "kusonigai yumoru" meaning "A bitter drink." I'll keep looking.

Background:

Spoiler: 3-4
When Terry was 20 he was seduced by the 14 year old Dahlia. She convinced him to "kidnap" her and hold her for ransom, so they could get her father's priceless sapphire and run away together. But when it came time to make the set up exchange Dahlia's sister Valerie shot Terry, intending to cut him out of the deal. Dahlia, with the sapphire in her backpack, leapt off the bridge that was their meeting point. Terry was thought to have thrown her into the river and was charged with her murder. He was convicted.

Years later Terry escaped prison and tried to contact Valerie, so that they could meet and discuss what had happened. Before going to the meeting he stopped at a secret place only he and Dahlia knew about, finding her glass vial necklace. She left him a note saying that if he ever came to doubt her, he should drink the contents as punishment for such a betrayal.

Terry went to meet Valerie, but he didn't get any answers, and when Valerie was found dead in the trunk of her car he was quickly blamed for her murder and put on trial again.
